Landau Damping of Surface Plasma Waves
نویسندگان
چکیده
The integral of the kinetic electrostatic surface wave dispersion relation is asymptotically evaluated to determine the frequencies of the normal modes and the corresponding Landau damping for the high frequency surface electron plasma wave and the low frequency surface ion acoustic wave. The asymptotically calculated Landau damping rates apply to the limiting cases of kx e <<1 and kx e >>1 where kx is the wavenumber and e is the electron Debye length. We also calculate Landau damping rate of the transverse magnetic (TM) mode surface wave.

In this article, non-linear Landau damping and generation of BGK mode in non-magnetized plasma are studied by using particle simulation. As plasma environment consists of electrons and ions, it is simulated by particle method and it is supposed that ions are considered as a motionless background. On the other hand, electron’s dynamic is obtained from solving Newton’s equation and the electron...
متن کاملHigh-frequency Surface Waves in a Current Carrying Hot Plasma Column
The propagation of high-frequency axially-symmetric surface waves along a current-carrying hot plasma column in a glass tube is investigated by means of a kinetic plasma model. The wave spectrum and the wave damping rate are obtained. Our results agree with the experimental data for surface wave propagation in a gas-discharge plasma at low pressures. It is found that the wave damping is mainly ...

200 LLE Review, Volume 75 The collisionless damping of electrostatic plasma waves, first predicted by Landau1 in 1946 and since rederived in many ways and confirmed experimentally, has become perhaps the most well known phenomenon in plasma physics. Landau damping plays a significant practical role in many plasma experiments and applications but has continued to be of great interest to theorist...
متن کاملMeasurement of Landau damping and the evolution to a BGK equilibrium.
Linear Landau damping and nonlinear wave-particle trapping oscillations are observed with standing plasma waves in a trapped pure electron plasma. For low wave amplitudes, the measured linear damping rate agrees quantitatively with linear Landau damping theory. At larger amplitudes, the wave initially damps at the Landau rate, then regrows and oscillates, approaching a steady state, as predicte...
